Meet Buck: French Animation Win

I don't know why I am continuously surprised by the amazing French animation I'm finding, but ever since discovering the work coming out of Gobelins, I've been looking for even more. The short (no dialogue) film below is absolutely stunning animation, both due to it's amazing blend of 3D with hand-painted style and the fluid animation throughout... well worth the watch. Check it out!

Captain America Sneak Peak

Well, the super bowl is over and a few awesome trailers were debuted. Thor's trailer has been around for a while and the newer JJ Abrams trailer for "Super 8" was quite interesting and vague. The trailer for Captain America however... was brand new and actually surprised me with how awesome it looked. I had my doubts about Chris Evans being cast as Cap, but... he's certainly looking the part. Check out the trailer for yourself below!

A Sea of Animated Sequels

This may be old news to some, but in case you haven't heard, fans of CG animated films are in for an onslaught of sequels. Specifically, both Pixar and Dreamworks have plans for sequels and even entire franchise's in some cases. Toy Story 3 was the latest Pixar sequel, with Cars 2 being the next in line (a dubious choice in my mind as the original was arguably Pixar's weakest film). Monsters Inc. 2, has been confirmed as well (to be released November 2012). That said, Pixar is also producing an original, Brave. So long as they are using these sequels to fuel original films as well, I'm really not too worried.

Dreamworks is proving to be an even bigger "offender," with a huge slate of sequels (read Shrek-level franchises) slated around Kung-Fu Panda 2, Madagascar 3 and How to Train Your Dragon 2. Madagascar 3 will lead to a fourth film and Dragon has the potential to be a huge franchise (there will be at least three movies), as there are eight books the movies could follow. Panda meanwhile has been determined to be a six-movie franchise. What do you all think? Is the franchise/sequel craze from these two studios a good thing or no?

In slightly other news, there are other studios producing original work these days. An example is Arthur Christmas, the first CG film from Aardman Animation (Wallace and Gromit, Flushed Away). I embedded the teaser trailer below, if you're interested. It's a little early to tell, but it looks promising.

A Modern Roadrunner : Still Funny?

This short was recently released in theaters (along with two others by Warner Brothers), which you may have missed. I happened to see it on a plane recently, so I thought I'd share. So what do you think? Is the CG version still funny?

Personally, I think the style works really well and aside from the obvious stereoscopic shots feels really true to the original. Heck, even the in-your-face 3D shots lend themselves well to a lot of the Coyote's antics. Let me know what y'all think.

Nov 22nd Reviews

This week I'm looking at two polar opposite movies, Red and Antibodies. One is a fun action flick that never takes itself too seriously and pulls all of it's ridiculous stunts quite well. The other is a German film that lacks any fun or humor at all and is possibly one of the most grim movies I've ever seen and still enjoyed.

It's a Trap!

Even as Family Guy stumbles and falters to find the funny these days, the Star Wars spoofs they produce remain some of their funnier material. At last, the third and "final" spoof It's a Trap! releases December 21st. Check out the trailer below!

Cowboys and What Now?

I have to say... this is my kind of Western. Let me know what you think. I for one am putting this down as potentially awesome.

Kung-Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom Teaser

As good as the first one was, what do y'all think of there being a sequel? Is Po destined to be the next Shrek (i.e. the next beloved character to be run into the ground)? Or is more of the fighting Panda's antics something y'all are craving?

Either way, I'm pretty excited about it, as it will also herald the start of the Kung-Fu Panda show created by none other than Nickelodeon!

Nov 9th Reviews

This week in reviews, two animated movies that are really fun to look at, Megamind and The Secret of Kells. Note: Each movie poster links to Rotten Tomatoes, which allows you to look at more than just my opinion. In addition, if the movie is available through Netflix, there's a button below the movie's description that allows you to add it to your queue... a handy feature, to be sure.

Nov 1st Reviews

Well, at least these reviews are a bit more "fresh" than the last. The Town, has probably run its course in most theaters (I saw a very late screening of it), but I'll share my opinion on it anyway! This week's Netflix/rental happens to be a very unknown/undersold space-horror, Pandorum. Prepare for amazing wit and in-depth nit-picking, after the jump!

Oct 25th Reviews

Whew... "better late than never" seems to be a life-defining phrase for me right now. Sorry for the delay! First up, it's Paranormal Activity 2, a sequel to a pretty awesome horror flick and Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog... something rather difficult to define. Read my attempt to explain the cult classic (if it isn't, it should be) after the jump.

Browncoats, Unite!

Nothing but good things have been coming out about the Uncharted (2) game and apparently they are going to try and capitalize on this success and make it a movie. While I was borderline on this news at first, I then discovered this:

Yes, Nathan Fillion (a.k.a Captain Reynolds, Captain Hammer, Richard Castle) is running a Twitter/viral campaign to be cast as Nathan Drake. While I know relatively little about the Uncharted world, what I have seen leads me to believe that Fillion is the perfect fit for the role. This has nothing to do with a man-crush.

I swear...

Anyway, tweet this post, share it on FB or simply use the #nathanfillionfornathandrake tag in your tweets. Get this ball rolling Browncoats!

Oct 18th Reviews

In contrast with last week's post, today I review two films that received... mediocre ratings at best (about 50% each on Rottentomatoes), Devil and TiMER. Check out what I thought (and why I even bothered watching them) after the jump.

Oct 11th Reviews

For review this week, two movies that have received rave ratings: The Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. As always, the first is still in theaters and the second is available via Netflix (streaming!).

Oct 4th Reviews

Here are the first few movies I've reviewed: Buried, Let Me In and... Fido. Not sure one way or the other about seeing these movies and need a final push? Never even heard of some (frankly, I'd be surprised if you knew of Fido)? Read on and see what my take was on each.

As a FYI, my future goal is to review two movies a week, posting them on Monday. One will be currently in theaters and one available in stores (read: Netflix streaming). You're super lucky this week as I review two current movies... and one you've never heard of.
